This could be that the smaller muscles around your knee joint need a bit more strengthening or it can even be nerve tension. There is so many things it could be so it's hard to tell. Using cushions or blocks just above your knee to take the pressure off could work. Or focusing on lying down in box splits/ frog etc until your hips open more might work. If it is really painful you might want to ask a physical therapist.
